What's the Buzz? Bee Week at RPS!

DSCN7989
This year, for the first time, we are doing "Bee Week!" Our history teacher, Gus Buchanan, has been teaching students about bees, running an apiary, and producing honey for years. This fall, we decided to do some cross-cirriculum work about bees in all of our classes. Students will be learning about the process of honey production, from hive design to extraction, as well as the science of pollination and hive organization. With all of the recent publications about the importance of bees to our food supply and the drop off of the bee population, there are ample opportunities for students to work on research projects. As always, students will don bee suits (challenge by choice!) and collect honey from our hives, witness our queen bees in action, and taste some delicious honey. Students may also have the opportunity to make chapstick, candles, and other crafts from bees wax. Even our chef will be making recipes focusing on honey this week!
