One of the unexpected changes over the past few years has been how the rise of video meetings allows greater participation. We’ll always value in-person connections at Rock Point School as the ideal, and at the same time, these virtual gatherings have opened up new avenues for parent engagement.  During the pandemic, I initiated a monthly parent discussion via video meeting, which has become a vital part of how we stay connected as a school community.

Here are five things I’ve learned from these conversations:

Parents Want to Feel the Culture, Even from Afar

While our campus sits on the shores of Lake Champlain, our families are spread far and wide. In our virtual meetings, parents consistently ask about not just what’s happening at Rock Point, but how it feels to be here. They want to know that their child is in a place where they are seen, heard, and supported. These conversations remind me of the importance of communicating not just facts, but also feelings. We want to bring the spirit of Rock Point to life, even through a screen.

Communication Builds Trust

When we’re able to meet "face-to-face" in a video meeting, I see firsthand how much parents appreciate transparency. Whether we’re sharing successes or challenges, these meetings foster trust by showing that we are in this together. Parents don’t expect perfection; they want honesty, partnership, and clear communication. Virtual meetings have helped us strengthen that bridge.

Every Parent Brings Insight

Each family’s story is different, and hearing directly from parents adds depth to our understanding of our students. I’ve learned so much from parents sharing what works at home, what their student needs most, or how they’ve seen growth over time. These insights shape how we support our students and how we evolve as a school.

Small Moments Matter

A quick anecdote about dorm life. A student’s newfound love of ceramics. The way a staff member helped someone through a tough day. These little stories, often shared during our video calls, are the heart of what we do. They help parents see the day-to-day care and intention behind their child’s experience. I’ve learned to always come prepared with these snapshots—they matter more than a data point ever could.

Community Extends Beyond Campus

Perhaps most importantly, virtual meetings have reminded me that Rock Point’s community is not limited to those who walk our halls each day. Our parents, alumni, and supporters are vital threads in the fabric of our school. Even when they’re miles away, their voices matter. These meetings are a way to honor that connection and ensure families feel like part of something bigger.

C.J. and dogAs we move forward, video meetings will continue to be a regular part of how we stay connected with families. They’re not a substitute for a hug on graduation day or a warm welcome at Family Weekend, but they are a powerful way to build trust, share stories, and remind us that we are all rowing in the same direction.

Thank you to all the parents who have shown up, spoken honestly, and helped shape our community through a tiny camera lens. I’m grateful for each conversation and look forward to many more.
