Questions to Ask When Touring A Boarding School

As we continue to welcome summer visitors to Rock Point School and accept new students for the 2026-2027 school year, we always encourage questions from parents and students to help them get a true sense of our school. If you are in the process of touring boarding schools, here are the top questions our admissions team recommends families should ask on their school visits.

1. How Would You Describe the Campus Culture?

Every school has its own personality. While brochures often focus on academics or facilities, the day-to-day experience of living on campus can have just as much impact on a student's success. As you tour, ask about traditions, student life, relationships between students and faculty, and what happens outside of class.

• What traditions are unique to the school?
• How do faculty interact with students outside the classroom?

2. What Type of Student Thrives Here?

No school is the right fit for every student, and that's okay. Ask schools what qualities or characteristics they see in the majority of their students. Their answer can help you to determine if your student would be a fit and provides a sense of who your student’s peers would be.

• What type of students aren’t a fit or haven’t seen success here?
• What opportunities exist for students to pursue their interests?
• Can I speak with or hear from a current student whose experience is similar to my child's?

3. What Support Is Available for Students?

Every student will need support at some point. Ask not only what services are available, but how the school responds when a student begins to struggle academically, socially, or emotionally.

• How are parents informed if concerns arise?
• Who is the first person my student would turn to for support?
• What happens if my student falls behind academically or becomes disengaged?

4. What Are The Values and Mission of the School?

Understanding a school's mission and core values can provide valuable insight into the type of environment your student will experience each day. A school's values shape everything from how students and staff interact to how challenges are addressed, how success is defined, and what is prioritized both inside and outside the classroom.

• Can you share an example of your mission in action?
• What traditions or programs reflect the school's values?

5. How Does the School Communicate with Families?

Strong communication between home and school is essential, especially when your student is attending a boarding school. As you explore your options, ask how the school keeps families informed about their child's academic progress, social-emotional well-being, and life on campus. It's also helpful to learn how parents are encouraged to stay connected and engaged with the school community throughout the year.
