The first-ever project that I have worked on in Jeannie's art class is making a sketchbook. I've never done this in many art classes before, so it seemed kind of odd to me at first. The longer I worked on it, though, the more passionate I became.
In art classes at my past schools, I've been taught very rigid rules, and only ever used traditional materials, such as graphite and acrylic paint. I never felt very passionate about any of my projects, and I always threw them away once the grading period was over. Although I've never enjoyed art classes, I love making art. I've been an avid fiber artist since my Grandma Kathy taught me how to sew one Thanksgiving, and my parents have always empowered my love for art and poetry, but my classes had been... well, abysmal.
From the moment that I met Jeannie last spring, I knew that her class was going to be different. As I've worked on building my sketchbook, I've already learned so much about art that I wouldn't have even thought of. I learned that marker art is... a thing, and that I enjoy it a lot! I've learned that I really want to do mixed media collage at least once, and that there's a specific kind of paper made for collaging. I learned that I really like building something that I can feel with my hands, as opposed to drawing something.
I haven't finished making my sketchbook yet, and I doubt that the process will ever really be over. Though I am a newer student at Rock Point, I already feel as though Jeannie's art class will be an incredible place for me to learn and grow as an artist, and I can't wait to see where this place takes me.
