Playwriting 2021

Posted by Abbey Baker | December 1, 2021

51686718528_0d727e4652_cNine RPS students elected to take part in the Vermont Young Playwrights' workshop on Tuesday, November 16. Among them were students with lots of experience writing plays, students who have been involved in theatre but never tried their hand at writing their own play, and students who are trying out drama for the first time. With the guidance of professional playwright Jordan Gullikson, they spent the day playing improv games, learning the basic tenets of writing plays, and then beginning their own plays.

One of the most exciting parts of participating in the playwriting process, is that it is often a doorway into writing for students who may not have enjoyed writing in the past. Writing a play is such a different process than writing a story or an essay and many students relish getting to work collaboratively with peers to bring their stories to life.

The first culmination of their creative efforts will happen in February, when we cast and produce the student plays right here at Rock Point School (stay tuned for more details as the production gets closer!). And the final culmination happens in May, when the Vermont Young Playwrights choose two of our plays to perform at their statewide festival at the Flynn. We love the opportunity to work with the Vermont Young Playwrights program, and are excited to see the work our students create!
